Objectives to be achieved
Objective 1: Make children understand how plants grow from a seed. They have been reading about it in books but now with this experiment they will learn to observe the nuances of natureObjective 2: They will learn to reason out how some seeds germinate early whereas some take more time to germinate though all were soaked at the same time.
Underlying Concept behind this activity
Students will realize that germination is a slow process and when all conditions are favorable for germination then only seed will germinate
Resources required for conducting the activity
15-20 Black gram seeds, water, chart paper and pencils, transparent tape, Glass beaker covered with black chart paper and piece of black chart paper as a lid
Require Parents involvement if its given as homework to do this experiment. Or it can be done in classroom and observations can be made on a daily basis.
Class Activity Details
Step 1: Make the students observe the shape and size of the dry gram seeds.
Step2: Soak the grams in water overnight and drain excess water next day. Keep it covered.
Step 3: Make the students observe what is happening everyday in the seeds. Ask them to write one line. give them clue words like- dry, swell, moist, sprouting, seedlings, fiber roots, white shoot, green shoot
Step 4: Give them a table which they need to fill everyday after their observations:
Day Observations
Step 5: Ask them some questions-
1. What do you think happened when the seed got soaked in water? Why did seeds germinate.
2. Why do you think all seeds did not germinate at the same time? (this question is meant for higher classes but should be asked to these children because it will build in curiosity in them to start observing and analyzing the situations)
Practice worksheets
Ask them to draw the process of germination in their note book and in two lines explain what is happening every day.

Brainstorming questions asked in class
Questions to ask-
1. What do you think happened when the seed got soaked in water? Why did seeds germinate.
2. Why do you think all seeds did not germinate at the same time? (this question is meant for higher classes but should be asked to these children because it will build in curiosity in them to start observing and analyzing the situations)
Evaluation parameters to assess the understanding of the students
Accurate, Clearly explained, Complete, Knowledgeable, Informative
Impromptu changes made if any during activity, reasons
Children were excited about the project from the beginning. But since the project was for 14 days, to make sure students are writing their observations, every third day, a few questions were asked to the students as to how their seeds were progressing. This ensured they did not loose interest in the whole project and went back to see for themselves the progress of their seeds
Any suggestions for other teachers while implementing this activity in classroom.
