Step 1: You can begin the class by asking children simple questions like when they take a bath in the tub or when they put anything in water then what happens.
Objective is to make them connect with the situation which they have experienced multiple times but now you are trying to draw their attention to this concept of sinking and floating
Step 2: If you have the opportunity to take kids out in the school lawn or outdoors then take them on a nature walk and ask them to collect the following items:
- Pieces of stick or twigs
- Flowers
- dry or green leaves
- Small Stones
(Else you can collect all these items and get it for the class.)
Step3: Once you have collected all these items divide the children in groups and ask them to put one thing at a time in their tubs filled with water.
Like They first put in twigs and see what happened.
Ask children what is happening to the twig in the water. Did it go down and touch the tub or is it moving on the water
Next flower- Ask children what is happening to the flower in the water. Did it go down and touch the tub or is it moving on the water
Next Dry leaves- Ask children what is happening to the dry leaves in the water. Did it go down and touch the tub or is it moving on the water
Explain them that this concept is known as floating. With these examples we have made them understand what is floating.
Step4: Now take the last item they collected. ie stones. Ask children what is happening to the stone in the water. Did it go down and touch the tub or is it moving on the water.
Let them answer the question. try to get the answer from each group.
Once they have answered then tell them that stone has sunk in water.
Now give them a work sheet of their to tick whether it floats of sinks.
